Opatija is one of the most beautiful towns in Croatia, and certainly among the most attractive travel destinations. The town is located on the Northern Adriatic coast, being the center of the Opatija Riviera, along with Ičići, Ika, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga. It is known as the «pearl of the Adriatic» since the middle of the 19th century, when it started developing as a tourist destination: these days, the wonderful Villa Angiolina is still one of the most beautiful villas with a large park, in which there are more than 150 protected species of plants, brought from all over the world, along with a multitude of flowers and other colorful parks which are abundant in Opatija. Because of its climate, it became a spa at the end of the 19th century, and in return, the spa grew into the epicenter of this part of Europe, and many a crowned head was convinced by its beauty: princes Elisabeth («Sissi»), the emperor Franz Joseph, Queen Maria Anna and many others. In order to retain its status, Opatija is abundant with modern esthetic polyclinics, dentist offices, wellness-spas and fitness centres. A multitude of restaurants with a view of the sea, cafes along the 10-kilometer promenade (called «lungo mare» in Italian), beaches, several casinos, regattas and the town's location in the vicinity of the airport are certainly a big bonus in addition to the natural beauties of this area.
