Sv. Filip i Jakov

Sv. Filip i Jakov is a village and summer resort with a shallow sea and flat shore, 25 km south of Zadar. It is a picturesque place on the Zadar riviera adorned by a seris of secluded and calm coves and numerous islets. This place is realy nice for relaxing, offering attractive pebble, sand and rocky beaches.

The settlement got its name after the reconstructed medieval parish church dedicated to the Apostles Philip and James. Until the Turkish excursions the settlement was called Rogovski Pristan because it served as a landing place for the Benedictine monastery at Rugovo, north-east of Filipjakov, which was built in the 11th century by the Croatian kings when the Croatian capital was near Biograd. The residence was several times damaged by the Turks and finally destroyed by the Venetians in the Cretan War (17th century) The remains of the building have been incorporated into the house of the Pelicaric family. The monastery at Rugovo was also destroyed which remains can still be seen. The church of St. Roch, built in the 11th century and later reconstructed, has survived almost intact. It houses an interesting wooden Gothic crucifixion dating from the 14th century.
