Saint Veronica was the woman who, pious legend relates, wiped the face of Christ with her veil and was rewarded with having his image imprinted on it. Her connection with this flower is that the savants of the Middle Ages thought they could see a face in it; they must have peered rather closely, because veronica flowers are not exactly large 12 mm in wide is big for the genus. The species range from prostrate, creeping plants suitable for the rock garden to 1.8m high giants.
