Villa Carlina

The name has a romantic origin, based on the legend that Charlemagne(carolus in Latin) had one of these thistless revealed to him by an angel as the plant that would avert a plague that was laying low his army. They include annuals and perennials with basal rosettes of leaves armed with sharp spines. The flowering stems bear oneto several large flowerheads with densely massed florets surrounded by showy, pale papery bracts that are quite glossy.
