This genus consists of 150 or so species of annuals and perennials, many of them tendril climbers and some of them edible. The leaves are pinnate with the uppermost pair of leaflets usually modified into tendrils. The pea-shaped flowers come in a wide range of colors, from red, mauve and white to blue and even pale yellow. Flat seed pods follow the flowers. Lathyrus odoratus, the sweet pea, has a proud place in the history of science, for it was one of the chief plants used by Gregor Mendel(1822-84) in his hybridizing experiments which laid the foundations for the science of genetics.
